The Brazilian government, through the Interministerial Intellectual Property Group, and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the implementation of Brazil’s National Intellectual Property Strategy.
This instrument will foster cooperation between Brazil and the WIPO in areas such as industrial property, industrial designs, copyright, trademarks, and geographical indications, thus strengthening innovation in agriculture and adding value to different products and services.
The National Intellectual Property Strategy consists of a system to stimulate creativity and investments in innovation by businesses and companies of all sizes, promoting competition nationally and internationally, and sustainable socioeconomic development.
In agriculture, intellectual property provides tools such as the Geographical Indication, an industrial property instrument that distinguishes a product or service of unique quality, giving it specific identity, reputation and intrinsic value, thus advancing regional development.
Now, 89 Brazilian products have Geographical Indication, including cheese from Canastra, coffee from Mantiqueira de Minas, cocoa from Tomé-Açu, apple from São Joaquim. Agricultural innovation actions may also benefit from the international articulation promoted jointly with WIPO.
